From the 11th to the 24th of September, the Chaniartoon International Comics Festival in Chania tells in an exhibition the career of one of the most important creators of Italian humorous comics, specifically with Disney characters: Luciano Gatto. In the exhibition, you will see original pages and illustrations from different periods of his long career.
The official presentation of the exhibition will take place on Friday, September 22 at 18:00, in the presence of the great Italian artist, Luciano Gatto, as well as his student and Disney comic book designer, Valerio Held.
Luciano Gatto was born in Venice on May 21, 1934. In 1955 a neighbor, who knew his passion for drawing and Disney characters, informed him that another Venetian, a certain Romano Scarpa, had started drawing stories for the " Topolino", the weekly magazine corresponding to the Greek "Mickey Mouse". The news excites Gatto, who begins copying the Disney characters, later showing Romano Scarpa the results of his work, then receiving helpful advice, some of which related to the sensitive stage of melanoma, for which Scarpa he needed partners.
He began to practise, so that he soon assumed the role of chief assistant to the great designer, inking his famous stories such as "The Claw of Kali" and "The Legend of the Flying Scotsman". Gatto continued to practice self-taught until 1956, when he managed to sell to Il Ponte Publications, under the direction of Renato Bianconi, three short stories with characters of his own invention. After a few months Gatto received a script to illustrate a 12-page story featuring the small mountaineer Raviolo Kid.
For four years Gatto also draws stories with Geppo and Nonna Abelards and invents the little man of the Pietrino caves, drawing a total of fifty stories. But Gatto wants to draw Disney heroes. Finally, in March 1958, he was called to the editorial room of director Mario Gentilini, who assigned him the first Disney story "Paperino e il ciliego rabdomante" (unpublished in Greece), starting a collaboration that has continued to this day.
In the first years of the 60s he collaborated with the magazine "Il Monello" designing seven episodes of Sempronio, Felicino and Arcibaldo, replacing Gino Gavioli and with the editor Fasani, while in the 70s and 80s he created more of one hundred stories for the German market with the two fox twins Fix and Foxi. In the 90s, on the contrary, he designed many stories of Topo Gigio and Prezzemolo.
The exhibition "Luciano Gatto - Over 60 years of Italian humor comics" traces an admirable career during which the great Italian comic drew hundreds of stories. The exhibition route, curated directly by the creator, starts from the beginnings of his career, with the help of a short biography and a chronology with references to his collaborations outside of Disney, but also to the period of his apprenticeship at the side of the great conductor of comic, Romano Scarpa, copying three pages from the story "The Night of Kali"
(1958), a masterpiece by Scarpa, with whom Gatto had collaborated as an inker.
Wishing, when transferring the exhibition to Greece, to focus on the world of Disney, given that in our country he became known mainly from the stories published in magazines such as "Mickey Mouse", "Big Mickey", "Almanac", " Donald', 'Classics' and more, dominated by his ink and tempera illustrations, mostly inspired by the most beloved stories featuring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck.
Transfer editor: Yiannis Iatrou
Francesca Ghermandi was born in Bologna in 1964. Her comic stories and illustrations have been published in Italian and foreign magazines since the mid-eighties such as: «Frigidaire», «Echo des Savanes», «Linus», «Zero Zero» , «Il Manifesto», «La Repubblica», «Internazionale» etc.. She has been awarded as the best writer at the Lucca Comics Festival, while she has created many comics such as Pasticca, Einaudi, The Wipeout, Fantagraphics Books, Hiawata Pete, Grenuord, Swamp Chronicles, Coconino
Press.
But what would happen if, in order to achieve narrative and visual originality, we tampered with the established rules of this mass typography, the law of copies-clones? This experiment is what this exhibition is about: 7 different copies of the same story with a common script and design but different colors, font, page size, direction, all so that each copy is a different version of the story and a different reading experience for the reader. reader.
Amidst the vast expanse of space lies Orbital Station Omega X4, a beacon of human ingenuity and a hub for interstellar exploration. But darkness lurks within its metallic walls in "Space Parasites". In this gripping social deduction game, players are crew members of the space station, where alien parasites have infected some with a hidden agenda. As the stakes rise, players are assigned crucial missions throughout the interconnected modules and chambers of the station. Through these endeavours, they forge fragile alliances and strive to deduce who among them has succumbed to the parasitic threat.
Set inside the Sabbionara space, the game takes on a genuinely immersive dimension, employing a 270-degree screen that envelops players, heightening the sense of urgency and realism. As they navigate missions and alliances, participants are surrounded by panoramic visuals of the space station and the vast expanse of the cosmos, further intensifying the experience and blurring the lines between reality and the game. Join the game at the Chaniartoon 7 festival, enter the enigmatic realm of Orbital Station Omega X4, and discern friends from foes before time runs out.

Space Sarcophagus is a game about realizing death in the void of space. The characters become trapped in a spaceship adrift after a system malfunction, and gradually realize they have no escape; the shuttle will become their Sarcophagus. In this game, there is no way to escape the setting and the level of conflict is low. Space Sarcophagus does not revolve around solving problems or playing dramatic scenes, but rather around the tense atmosphere in the shuttle as the characters submit to their fate.
Genre: Contemporary tragedy
Trigger warnings: Relatives' deaths, close to death experience, emotional breakups
Playing style: Realist
Game language: Greek (you can still participate in this game without knowing Greek but the main language will be the native)
Larp design: by Kaia Aardal, Jone Aareskjold and Martin Nielsen of the original game Sarcophagus, part of “LARP factory book project”
Adaption and facilitation: by Polynikis Papoulias for the Chaniartoon 7

Life outside of the Earth: how to design an alien
What should you consider before successfully designing a convincing alien? What are the life properties that can make the difference between an earthling and an alien? What are the biological traits of living organisms that you need to understand in order to design spectacular alien life? In this talk, Dr. Anna Gioran, biologist and sci-fi aficionado, will explore these questions through the numerous examples of inexhaustible and majestic life that prevails on our planet.
Dr. Anna Gioran studied biology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and conducted her doctoral studies at the University of Bonn in Germany. After earning her PhD, she worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the German Center for Neurodegenerative Disorders (DZNE). At the moment, Dr. Gioran works as a postdoctoral researcher at the National Hellenic Research Foundation. In addition to this, for the past decade she has been working as a scientific consultant for SoundFellas that is a software and media company based in Greece. Her scientific interests revolve around metabolism and ageing while during her free time she loves watching sci-fi films and observing popular aliens.
Space, fantastic technologies of the future, aliens and their planets are some of the most loved themes in books, paintings, movies, video games, and other forms of expression and entertainment. In the media that includes audio, sound has particular importance because it provides the necessary realism that transports the audience to the center of the action. In this talk, Pan Athen, the founder of SoundFellas and creator of Echotopia, through examples from famous works, will break down the key areas that creators should focus on in their sound so that their projects have aesthetic coherence with the script and their audience is immersed in a unique experience.
Pan Athen is a sound designer, entrepreneur, and educator. He has been involved in audio production and software development for over 30 years and has been teaching audio and creative media for over 22 years. To date, he has directed audio production for bands such as “On Thorns I Lay”, video games such as “Darkfall Online”, and films such as “Short Fuse”, and he has taught audio and creative media to over 2000 students. In 2011 he founded SoundFellas in Greece and, with his team, has designed and produced a large number of stock sound libraries, the video game quality control speaker simulation software “SoundCheck for Unity”, the mobile soundscape composition application “DMDJ”, and the professional soundscape production application “Echotopia”.
What material are the planets made of? Did you know that each planet has its own sound, or that the sky on Mars is pink? What is our neighbourhood in the universe? How far are the rest of the planets from Earth? How was the universe created? If you find these questions interesting, where to see and answer them!

The soundscape is one of the key elements of a scene's sound, along with dialogue, Foley, special sound effects, and score. In science fiction, sound helps us bring unique environments and characters to life and create fantastic new worlds. In this hands-on workshop, Pan Athen, the founder of SoundFellas and creator of Echotopia, will teach the soundscape creation techniques used by professional sound designers using Echotopia (soundfellas.com/software /echotopia/). Participants will need a Windows laptop (technical requirements on Echotopia’s webpage) and headphones and will be given a special version of Echotopia to use during the workshop. Attendees will also be given a special discount coupon for the new version of Echotopia, along with all audio content.

Manos Grigoriou thinks his life is boring, alarm clock, office work, situations with numbers, paperwork, every day the same. His only fun is the voracious reading of science fiction books. Until Cosmodromio is published, a magazine will take him out of his everyday life and lead him to great emotions. The Cosmonaut is a book about small victories and daily feats. For the anxiety of creation, the pressure of writing, and the joy of the first publication. And finally, a story of self-searching against the background of famous science fiction books.

The truth is that the job of cartoonist/comic creator is very lonely. He spends endless hours at the drawing board creating yet more images and pages. That is why when he is given the opportunity to present to the public the way he works, it is something that makes him happy. So, Tasmar will draw live in the festival of Chaniartoon. Presentation of the Book "The semiotics of comics"
with Daniele Barbieri, Giannis Koukoulas, Giannis Mihailidis, Lefteris Stavrianos
The semiotics of comics is an understudied field. This book lays the groundwork for inquiry, starting with the classic notions of utterance and narrative, to include the particular meaning of storytelling through comics. It does so through the analogies and juxtapositions that arise from the comparison with cinema and the novel. It then investigates the graphic characteristics of comics in the peculiar interplay that develops between image and writing. It concludes with the creation of rhythm, the management of the reader’s attention, and the techniques of directing narrative tensions, which may be familiar to all narrative genres but nevertheless prove to be different in each case. Specialists―attempts to deal in a simple way with particularly complex problems by contrasting a theory of the comic text with existing theories of cinema, the novel, and the poetic text.
Daniele Barbieri is one of the most influential comics scholars in Italy. He studied philosophy and semiotics with Professor Umberto Eco. As a semiotician, his subject is visual communication, but he also deals with poetry and music. Around these topics, he has so far published 22 books and written more than 400 articles. He teaches at the Academy of Fine Arts of Bologna, the ISIA University of Urbino and the University of San Marino. His works have been translated into English, French, Spanish and Portuguese.
This Masterclass analyzes basic principles of Screenwriting and directing in Cinema, which also apply in comics. From the script and the composition of the character to the direction, the shots and the decoupage.

The projects that will be created will be given among the attendees of the live.
Realm Weavers shows the steps from the initial idea to the final result. On the occasion of the creation of the world of Dimday Red, the upcoming tabletop RPG, the workshop is for those who would like to create their own fantasy world ready to experience all kinds of stories. Writing experience is not necessary. A mood for cosmic creation (or destruction) is a must!

On the occasion of the recent decision by the multinational giant, The Walt Disney Company, to suspend, among other things, the republishing of some of the stories of the legendary comic creator Don Rosa (The Life And State Of Scrooge McDuck) as part of the renewal of its inclusion policies and diversity, we look at the impact of political correctness on Art and comics – with a particular interest in the production of stories featuring Disney characters.
Rarely has a magazine left such a mark on the hearts and souls of its readers as Mikros Iros, written by Stelios Anemodouras from 1953 to 1968 under the pseudonym «Thanos Astritis» and illustrated with his sketches by Byron Aptosoglou. This anniversary album of 228 pages is the most comprehensive study of the Little Hero phenomenon with rare and unpublished but also valuable information. In addition, it includes 45 new sketches by Greek artists that will be presented in the exhibition for the 70th anniversary, but also an unpublished true story of Thanos Astritis in drawings by Vassilis Goggilas, which is the starting point of this huge journey called Mikros Heros.
