War Zone

◷ 21 September 2026 – 4 October 2026⌖ Θέατρο Μίκης Θεοδωράκης

Giannis Antonopoulos, a master of his craft, with political insight and historical awareness, knows how to strip away the unnecessary: the noise of fleeting events, the empty rhetoric, the ideological narratives and the cheap excuses. He also knows how to identify what truly matters and, with a few simple lines, capture what is happening. He can even look beyond the present, towards what might exist if all this horror — of war, of a world ruled by the law of the jungle — were nothing more than a terrible nightmare. We have no alternative. We live and we hope. Hope lies among us. We keep searching for better days.

Antono does not confine himself to simply and passively recording events. With his sharp pen, characteristic biting irony and deeply humanistic perspective, he offers an uncompromising commentary on some of the greatest open wounds of contemporary history. His work addresses the war in Ukraine, the situation involving Israel following October 7, 2023, Greek-Turkish relations and the Cyprus issue, reaching all the way to the present day and the Trump era. Interestingly, as the artist himself points out, the American-Israeli attack on Iran was beginning just as the material for this book was being assembled.

The central thread organically connecting all the sketches, political cartoons and short comics in this collection is a courageous critique of the hypocrisy of global power. The cartoonist directs his criticism at those who claim and promise to bring peace, democracy and security through indiscriminate bombing. In doing so, he exposes the utter absurdity of war and the heavy, unbearable price that innocent civilians invariably pay. The artist's perspective is both Greek and international, linking the consequences at home to broader global geopolitical shifts.

The foreword is written by Antonis Nikolopoulos, also known as Soloup. Among other things, he observes:

“You wouldn't call cartoons like these ‘funny’. But you could call them mirrors, even magnifying glasses, because through the exaggeration and satire of their drawings, they reveal what is happening all around us. And at the same time, with a single glance, you can see ‘the whole picture’.”

John Antono (Giannis D. Antonopoulos) was born during the final phase of the Cold War. By the time the Berlin Wall fell, he had already drawn his first dozen cartoons. He realised he wanted to become a political cartoonist around the time NATO was bombing Serbia. When the Twin Towers were attacked, he was already attending the teenage programme at the Ornerakis School of Applied Arts.

He began studying History and Archaeology shortly after the US invasion of Iraq, while the war in Syria and the refugee crisis were raging during the years he pursued his Master's degree at the Department of Political Science and History at Panteion University.

In May, his third solo collection of political cartoons and comics was published. The book is titled *War Zone*, with the explanatory subtitle *A Chronicle in Political Cartoons, 2001–2026*.
